Yoga with Joy Prater (archived)
3 – 10 April 2020

Sadly this Yoga cruise with Joy was unable to go ahead because of Covid-19. We thought you’d like to see how lovely it would have been so have left the details here. If you’d still like to do practice yoga onboard a gulet take a look at the Yoga Cruise that Jo Bogacz is running 10 – 17 October 2020.

Join Joy on this journey of relaxation and meditation in bays of turquoise and blues and greens.  Travelling by gulet allows us to moor in small secluded bays where we can hike from one bay to another or stay onboard to relax, swim and snorkel in azure seas. Visit ruins that reflect Turkey’s long history from Lycian tombs, to Roman amphitheatres to the Turkish Ottoman period.

Joy teaches gentle yoga in a style that is accessible for all, combining asana (postures), flowing exercises, and meditation, with the breath.

Joy has rented our privately owned gulet East Meets West for your private charter. The trip is only open to people who practice yoga – whether you’re a novice or have been practicing for a lifetime you’re very welcome. To make the admin easier for Joy you can book your place directly with us, just press the Book Now button.

“Yoga with Joy, is quite literally that! Joy creates a beautiful space and holds the class in such a way that both beginners and more advanced yogis feel at home. Her deep knowledge, gentle approach and well thought through sequences give a sense of calm and wellbeing. I have practised with many teachers over the years and Joy’s class is the one I keep returning to time and again”. (Rebecca, yoga student)

Itinerary at a glanceAccommodationYoga & Hiking

Overview Marmaris – Fethiye*

Our flexible itnerary will allow for at least one yoga session each day, often more; with the opportunity to hike on at least 4 days if you want.

Day 1 Arrive in Marmaris. Join the gulet and settle into your cabin before dinner. Your meals are cooked by an onboard chef who prepares food using the best of local, fresh ingredients. The Turkish kitchen is very diverse and these meal choices are described to give you an idea of the variety of foods prepared for you.

Day 2  After having your Turkish breakfast onboard we take a short cruise across the bay for your first yoga session of the holiday. Dinner of Sea Bass, Aubergine meze, Purslane and Yoghurt salad, Green salad

Day 3  We will take a riverboat trip along a meandering river through a nature reserve of reedbeds to the ancient city of Kaunos – you can meditate amongst the ruins of an amphitheatre or in the garden of a once nomadic family. Bathe in hot thermal waters and take a mudbath too. Cruising past Lycian tombs we’ll see Iztuzu beach , the nesting ground of protected loggerhead turtles before returning back to the gulet for dinner.

Day 4  An early morning cruise sees us drop anchor in another turquoise bay where you can swim amongst the sunken ruins of Cleopatra’s Bath. A short morning hike through forest of arbutus, pine and olive trees with a magnificent viewing point at 250m. (4km 2 hours). Delicious lunch of Green Peppers stuffed with rice and tomatoes, Courgette and Aubergine Salad served with yoghurt

Day 5 Overlooked by Lycian tombs, yoga will be in the atmospheric bay of Bedri Rahmi; followed by a hike along a coastal path with fabulous views of the Gocek Islands (6km, 2-3 hours) Delicious lunch of Green Beans in Tomato Sauce

Day 6  Yoga practice in the morning followed by breakfast. Today’s hike takes us further around the coast with views of turquoise sea and green, pine clad mountains (6km, 2 – 3 hours). Dinner of Dalyan Kofte , Roasted Cauliflower with Garlic Yoghurt, Broad Bean Salad

Day 7 A day of cruising, singing and relaxation. Healthy lunch of Chickpeas and Lamb in a fresh Tomato sauce, bulgur wheat and salad.

Day 8  Say your goodbyes to the Captain and crew after breakfast.

Note :
* We aim to have daily yoga sessions most mornings but the nature of this trip means that our itinerary is flexible and open to change.
*Tour could operate in reverse.
*For all walks you need hiking boots, walking poles are recommended.
*Air-conditioning can be available for 3 to 4 hours daily in summer months. The use of A/C in harbours is strictly forbidden.

Depending on sea and weather conditions, Meridian Travels & Yachting reserves the right to make necessary changes to the tour itinerary to ensure the safety and comfort of our guests. The Captain’s decision is final.

Cabins on are smaller than you’d expect in a hotel but larger than on a sailing yacht. They are handcrafted from mahogany, iroko, teak and pine so are rustic but are clean and have a small wardrobe with storage under the bed for luggage. Every cabin has a private en-suite bathroom with toilet,  hand basin and shower; hot water is available in the evenings. One bath towel and one hand towel are provided; a beach towel is also provided.

With plenty of sunbeds on the fore and aft decks choose how to relax; sunbathing, reading, chatting or perhaps you’ll even sleep here under the stars. Meals are usually taken on the aft deck where you have a different view for almost every meal.

Low to Intermediate Hiking is optional.
The walks won’t exceed 4 or 5 miles and may be shorter, but the terrain is rocky, stony and uneven. There are some steep sections over loose trails; some narrow coastal paths and such sections require care. You will need a reasonable level of fitness to participate in the optional hikes. Appropriate footwear must be worn (trainers are not enough). If you like to hike and want to join the optional walks you need to bring a rucksack, hiking boots/shoes (with/without ankle support), hiking poles are very useful. Bring a refillable, reusable container for water.

Yoga
We intend to do yoga every day either on the decks of the gulet or  in some special places onshore. Being onboard our yacht will require participants to be adaptable but Joy is looking forward to taking you on this journey and conducting your yoga practice amongst nature.

These sessions will include some gentle dynamic exercises, waking the body up, as well as some longer-held postures, pranayama (breathing), stillness and yoga nidra (relaxation). A yoga mat is provided.

This is your holiday – all activities are optional; please feel free to find some quiet time to read, meditate or just watch the world go by.
