Hike & Gulet Cruise with Her on a Hill
Marmaris – Bozburun
19 – 26 October 2024

We’ve added this autumn date for Her on a Hill because the date in Spring filled so quickly.

Autumn translates to Second Spring in Turkish and so we should expect to see a final flourish of wild flowers, maybe be able to gather wild thyme, sage and oregano. The sea will remain impossibly turquoise and still warm enough to swim in. All of this with outstanding coastal  hikes, fabulous food and in the company of interesting women.

Throughout your stay, you have sole use of a traditional Turkish gulet as you cruise along the coast with its numerous unspoilt bays and secluded coves, approaching by boat is by far the easiest and most dramatic way to explore this incredible coastline.

The sea is a deep turquoise blue and the walking is on little used paths exploring the lesser known routes following the Carian coast around to the boat-building village of Bozburun. You will discover ancient ruins; traditional villages and the most amazing coastal views. Since creating this itinerary, many of these hikes are now included in the long distance hike known as The Carian Trail.

On board you will be looked after by Anne who will be guiding your walks as well as looking after you on the boat. In charge of the boat will be Captain Adil and his crew including a chef who will prepare the most wonderful Turkish fare for the group.

The itinerary includes walking on 4 or 5 days and a rest day for swimming, kayaking, reading or simply being at leisure. On  most days, there will be time to swim directly off the boat or from the shore.

Surely there’s no better way to explore the beautiful beaches and coves of the Turkish Aegean Sea than cruising and hiking.

Itinerary at a glanceAccommodationHiking

Cruising from Marmaris around the Resadiye Peninsula and on to the boat-building village of Bozburun you will have the opportunity to walk on 4 or 5 days taking in wonderful forest, mountain and sea views. We will visit ancient sites and  much more with plenty of time to swim and simply relax.

Day 1: Arrive in Marmaris. Dinner onboard with opportunity to explore the old town.

Day 2 Cruising after breakfast, we will anchor close to the starting point for our first hike which will give us panoramic views, the ruins of a Christian chapel and where we often see birds of prey circling high above. (2.5 – 3 hours 6 km) A coastal cruise during the afternoon will take us to a quiet bay for swimming and relaxing overnight.

Day 3 A day full of variety as we explore wetlands from a river boat, taking in ancient tombs, thermal bathing waters and mudbaths. All before hiking from the Lycian ruins of Kaunos, taking in outstanding coastal views along paths once used by local traders long before they had road access. (3.5-4 hours 9km)

Day 4 An early start sees us moor in a bay of turquoise waters. Our hike follows old goat trails with some steeper sections and magnificent views across to the Greek island of Rhodes.  (2 hours 3 km) During the late afternoon we can explore the ruined citadel of Bozukkale (broken castle) said to have been built around 700BC (1 hour)

Day 5   A day for cruising and relaxing; plenty of time to swim in these turquoise bays, catch up with your reading or simply immerse yourself.

Day 6 After a day of rest we start our next hike from a small fishing harbour which is protected by high cliffs on each side. Our hike takes us through an almost abandoned village following trails made by village people over the centuries. We then gain some height meandering through the terracing in the hills behind before reaching our summit (300m); we are then rewarded with magnificent coastal views for the whole of the walk down to the village of Selimiye. (3 hours 8 km)

Day 7 We will start our cruise back around the peninsula enabling us to arrive in Bozburun during the evening. A day for using your watercolours, finishing your books and reminiscing about the trip.

Day 8 Say your goodbyes to the crew and your new friends in Bozburun.

*The itinerary is subject to change at short notice – this is a rare occurrence but changeable weather conditions occasionally means we need to adjust our course.

East Meets West is a traditionally built, handcrafted wooden yacht; she has four double and four twin cabins, all ensuite. She has sails although operates under motor for most of the trip to ensure we can keep to our schedule.

Continued investment during the pandemic resulted in months of new carpentry – you’ll notice the new oak handrails and sidings mean the aft deck is more spacious and comfortable for eating and socialising.

Each cabin has a private en-suite bathroom with home style toilet, shower cubicle and hairdryer. Cabins have a small wardrobe, underbed storage, window and bedside light. Electricity is available in cabins for charging mobile phones and cameras every evening. Cabins are smaller than a hotel room but larger than you’d find on a typical sailing yacht. A bath towel, hand towel and beach towel are provided.

The bar, galley and salon are located in the wheelhouse where there are stunning 360° views. With plenty of sunbeds on the fore and aft decks choose how to relax; sunbathing, reading, chatting or perhaps you’ll even sleep here under the stars. There’s plenty of time to swim and snorkel too.

Meals are taken on the aft deck where you’ll enjoy a different view with every meal.

This departure is scheduled to be on our gulet East Meets West. All other departures are on other carefully selected gulets. We reserve the right – in exceptional circumstances –  to change the gulet for an alternative of at least the same standard.

Trip Grading: Low – Moderate. The hikes on this itinerary are along goat trails which are rocky and stony so the terrain is graded at moderate level. However, the walks are too short to be classed as moderate hence our overall grading of Low – Moderate.
How long are the walks? Hikes vary between 4 and 10 km and take between 2 hours and 4.5 hours for the longest walks.
How difficult are the walks? There are some steep sections over loose trails during the walk and such sections require care. The accent is on keeping a comfortable pace with time to stop and take photos. You will need a reasonable level of fitness to participate fully in this adventure.
What to bring?
Essential Hiking
boots (preferably with ankle support). Refillable Water Container or Camelbag. Day Backpack for water, sunscreen, camera etc
Recommended Hiking poles are extremely useful regardless of your level of fitness, particularly for this itinerary.
You will be provided with a full list with your joining instructions around 5 weeks before departure.
